A chatbot (also known as a conversational bot) is software designed and programmed to simulate a conversation with a person and, based on this conversation, take certain actions. Confusing? What types of chatbots exist?

  • ITR (Text Interaction Response) Chatbots: These are the least intelligent chatbots of all, which is why they are even known as “dumb chatbots.” This designation refers to the fact that this type of software does not use Artificial Intelligence; it operates based on commands. Typically, it uses predefined buttons that follow a sequential conversation logic. Its menu of options is predefined and does not change based on interaction.
  • Word-spotting Chatbots: These are in an intermediate point between the most intelligent and the most basic. Word-spotting chatbots operate by identifying keywords and pre-configured responses. Although this type of chatbot cannot understand the context or intention in a conversation as cognitive chatbots would, it can identify a keyword such as “price” and respond, whenever this word is mentioned, with the organization’s pricing table. They are not the brightest, but they can be useful for answering repetitive questions.

  • Cognitive Chatbots: Yes, it’s exactly what you’re thinking. In contrast to ITR chatbots, the most intelligent ones fall into this category. Cognitive chatbots use Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning as tools to understand the context and intention in a conversation, thus formulating responses from scratch that precisely address users’ intentions. Moreover, these chatbots learn from interaction with the user and thus refine their responses more and more. Also, companies can “teach” them by providing, for example, new information about their products or services. In summary: a very intelligent and amazing tool!
